Time is of the essence

As a child I remember my grandmother saying that she was half of 100, and I silently chuckled inside. I thought to myself, the idea of being half of 100 sured seemed pretty old. In the present I no longer think being 50 is old due to me being in my thirties now. However, in my childhood I had no idea about aging. My grandmother while relatively young at the age was recognizing the fact that she was closer than she once was to 100 years old.

She was further signifying that she was aware that she was getting older and her time with us would not be forever. Fortunately for my family and I, we still have both of our grandparents. Despite this immense blessing, I have been reminded of our mortality as human beings through the tragic loss of several relatives between 2020 to the present year.

In the present, I have a cousin who is only 51 years old who is dying of stomach cancer. This reality still to me seems surreal but I know it is still happening. In addition to this sad situation, I browsed Facebook today and saw that a woman who once worked at a bank that I used to work at died. She was also young, and I did not know her on a personal level but she always seemed cheerful and radiant. There were numerous facebook posts about her memory and my heart goes out to all of her loved ones mourning over her death.

Life is truly unfair at times. I have come to realize how fragile life is, and the importance of making the most of time. It is said in the biblical book of James 4:14: "Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Due to the reality that tomorrow is not promised, I feel more motivated than ever in my own personal life to bring my best self to the table and to maximize my existence. This is more easier said than done.

I believe that in order to live such a life, we must surround ourselves by such people. Consider your connections, and make more time for those that understand the value of time, the value of life, and value of legacy. We are often remember for the things that we have accomplished. What legacy are you leaving behind? For those of you who identify as being Christian or spiritual, are your actions putting a smile on your Creator's face? I challenge all those reading this post to continue pondering these questions because they are important issues to contemplate in life.
