THE POWER OF DEEP BREATHING

Updated: Dec 28, 2022

All consumers of therapeutic services or individuals that have seen therapeutic sessions simulated on television have heard about deep breathing.

One might think that this technique is overly used and ineffective, but this notion is far from the truth. While many of us are familiar with the concept of deep breathing, there are very few people that fully grasp the power of the breath.

This reality is because we live in a fast-paced world that is full of distractions that breed further disconnection from self and awareness of the present moment.

The Latin word for breath is "spritus" which relates to the human spirit or consciousness. Breathing further signifies life and the continuation of life; therefore, it is not by happenstance it is a vital therapeutic tool.

Deep breathing has been cited as being effective in combating the effects of our sympathetic nervous system, which in turns slows down heart rate and lowers blood pressure. The reduction of stress on our body also has a positive impact on our immune system.

In considering all the benefits that deep breathing provides us, why do so many people not do it?

The simple answer to this question is people often do what is familiar to them.

Let’s take a step in the right direction today and try deep breathing together.

Instructions:

o Find a quiet space and either lie down or sit down

o Silence your phone and electronic devices

o Close your eyes

o Place your right hand across your chest, and rest it on your heart center

o Listen quietly to the rhythm of your heartbeat and breath

o After listening intensely to the rhythm of your body, please take your left hand and place under your naval area.

o Imagine that your belly is a balloon and picture filling it up with air to its full capacity.

o Slowly release air until your body fully relaxes.

o Repeat this process several times
